CIVIL & ENVIRONMENTAL Shaw E & I Project Background The remediation work consisted of pre-excavation sampling at selected sites to further delineate the nature and extent of chemicals of concern and for waste characterization purposes, excavation, treatment by stabilization (if necessary), transportation and disposal of the impacted soil and sediment, and confirmation sampling to document the results of the removal actions. All of the work conducted at the GSA Phase II Sale Area were conducted in accordance with the USACE TERC contract requirements and under regulatory oversight by the California Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), California Regional Water Quality Control Board, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Below is a description of types of assignments that may occur under this contract: ERRG prepared the sitewide groundwater monitoring program to monitor potential groundwater impacts at four locations attributed to former USACE activities. ERRG selected existing wells that are optimally positioned to monitor one or more of the identified areas containing groundwater contaminants and focus the analytical program on the identified chemicals of concern. The sitewide monitoring program incorporates existing monitoring programs for other sites, including Landfill 26 located within the GSA Phase II boundaries, and the Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricant (POL) Hill site currently being monitored under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) portion of the Hamilton Army Airfield. The existing Landfill 26 monitoring program was reduced by ERRG based on previous sampling data. The sitewide monitoring program is also coordinated with Navy efforts to monitor a methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) plume that has migrated north from the Navy's property onto the GSA Phase II Sale Area. ERRG also provided oversight and maintained detailed documentation during all phases of a rapid response action involving hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. |
