CONSTRUCTION & REMEDIATION

Baylands Recovery Project
Phase I Firing Range Area

Project Background
Engineering Remediation Resources Group, Inc. (ERRG) was contracted by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) to clean up approximately 45 acres of skeet shooting range within the city of Menlo Park, California. The land had been leased from the SFPUC to the Pacific Sportsmen's Club from 1939 to 1994 for use as a target range. This left the property littered with bits of clay pigeon debris and lead shots.

Phase I of the cleanup singled out the site's Firing Range Area. This project involved excavation of two different areas. A depth of 12 inches below ground surface (bgs) was required for 35,960 square feet of the site and the remaining 190,700 square feet was dug at a depth of two inches bgs. The two-inch depth was achieved using a skiploader, while an excavator removed toxic material 12 inches deep.

ERRG personnel conducted dust control and air monitoring tests to protect on-site workers in accordance with the Health and Safety Plan.

During the site preparation and work area establishment, wetlands were identified within the exclusion zone by the SFPUC. ERRG erected a 4-foot construction fence around the designated wetlands to prevent unauthorized access into the sensitive areas.

ERRG excavated, sifted, and stockpiled approximately 4,162 cubic yards of soil contaminated with lead, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), antimony, and arsenic from the Firing Range Area.
